Onions, garlic and sunny sunday

Ok so this is it, time to start blogging. Thought that I should do this in order to keep you all up to date on the vagaries of my everyday life.

As some of you know, I love to make felt, fabric and button brooches and scarves, amongst other things. Some of you will also know that for 12 weeks, May to mid July, my family and I go sailing. We take the boys out of school and teach them aboard. At the same time I try to continue with my making, last year, totally failing on this. Somewhere into this mix I have to squeeze a dog (chocolate Labrador called Milly) and the garden - hence today's title.

Three years ago, before buying a boat and going sailing, the vegetable garden was created with the help of a friend. It was lovely that year to be able to go out a pick our own. We also had chickens so the eggs were our own too. Over the last 2 summers the vegetable beds have lain idle as I am just not around to tend them and Mr Badger has turned the chickens into his supper.

This year, I have rebelled. I want to grow some of my own. Hence, today I dragged big son, Ben aged 9.5, off the the garden centre to by onion sets and bulbs of garlic both things that will be able to survive the weeks of inattention. While there a succumbed to some seed potatoes that wont need harvesting until August. Also had an ooggle at some asparagus seed as it would need harvesting before sailing in a couple of years time...might have to go back for that. The onions and garlic have gone in and the I have started to dig over the bed that will be used for the potatoes this year. It felt good to dig and to do something constructive. There may be no chickens, but I am looking forward to having some produce of my own. I might even go in search of cluckers when the boys and I get home.

Also today, small son, Josh aged 6, had his first lesson in using grwon up tools...very excited. Today it was the saw, so he and his big brother later worked together to make small sailing boats to play with in the stream. Yes we have a stream. When my children are 35 and living in a tiny flat or house with a handkerchief for a garden, they will realise how lucky they were. The stream is great, they sail boats and build dams and harbours and generally get extremely wet and muddy.

That's it for starters, will keep you posted as on all the life has to deliver.
